On , following the end of the Vietnam War and the cessation of National Service, the Australian Army underwent a major reorganization. To maintain the traditions of both units while operating with reduced manpower, the 2nd Battalion (2 RAR) and 4th Battalion (4 RAR) were formally "linked" to form the 2nd/4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2/4 RAR) .
