In this episode, the protagonist , the Shield Hero, continues to strengthen his partnership with his slave-companion Raphtalia . After upgrading their equipment and mastering several defensive abilities, Naofumi visits the Dragon Hourglass to determine exactly when the next "Wave"—a catastrophic event where monsters pour into the world from another dimension—will occur.
When the Wave finally arrives, the other three summoned heroes (Sword, Spear, and Bow) rush to the central mass of monsters to seek glory. Naofumi, however, notices that the nearby is under direct attack and defenseless.
