Malaysia Buy New Jet Fighter File

Malaysia’s procurement strategy is currently split into two main tiers: immediate replacement of light aircraft and the long-term acquisition of multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA).

Beyond immediate light fighter needs, Malaysia is looking toward "5th-generation" capabilities to remain competitive in the region.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is currently undergoing a transformative period marked by strategic acquisitions and the phasing out of legacy platforms. This modernization effort is driven by the need to address aging fleet issues, high maintenance costs, and a shifting security landscape in the South China Sea. Current Modernization Strategy

KAI to export 18 FA-50 fighter jets to Malaysia - The Korea Times

Malaysia has committed to purchasing 18 South Korean KAI FA-50M jets. These aircraft are intended to replace the retired MiG-29N and aging Hawk 108/208 trainers. The first batch of six is expected by late 2026, with the full order completed by 2027.

Malaysia has actively pursued up to 33 used F/A-18C/D Hornets from Kuwait. While the U.S. has approved the transfer, the deal faces significant delays because Kuwait cannot release the jets until they receive their own new replacements. Future Prospects and 5th-Generation Ambitions
