Directed by Georges Franju, this film is a stylish whodunnit set in a Gothic castle in Brittany. After a terminally ill Count hides himself in a secret alcove to die and spite his heirs, the family is told they must wait five years for their inheritance—unless his body is found. To pay for the castle’s upkeep, the heirs create an elaborate "son et lumière" (sound and light) tourist show that reenacts a tragic family legend, but they soon begin dying one by one in suspicious "accidents".
