Professor Ellis Fowler, an elderly literature teacher at an elite Vermont prep school, is crushed when he is forced into mandatory retirement after 51 years. Convinced his career was a failure and he left no mark on his students, he prepares to take his own life on Christmas Eve. Before he can, he is summoned back to his classroom by a phantom bell, where he is visited by the spirits of seven former students who died heroically. Each spirit explains how Fowler’s lessons on courage, patriotism, and ethics inspired the acts of valor that defined their final moments—including one who received the Medal of Honor at Iwo Jima and another who died saving men at Pearl Harbor. Realizing his "victory for humanity" was won through the men he helped mold, Fowler accepts his retirement with a newfound sense of peace. : June 1, 1962 (despite its Christmas setting)
